I recently read all the trade paperbacks through volume 5. From what I got out of it, this is a series better read in monthly installments. The trades were too easy to zip through and I didn't get much time with any of the lesser characters that died- so I didn't really care about any of them. When I told someone that characters were dying too fast for me to really build up any emotional investment, we realized it's because he had been reading each monthly issue, where I just got 5 trades and sat down to read through years of story. So... for what it's worth, take your time with The Walking Dead (you'll probably get more out of it). It's a good zombie story.

You know...I never really looked at it like that. Of course, I was reading the trades as soon as they came out, so there was the build-up (as in, it wasn't possible for me to read all five at once, because all five weren't out. So I'd read WD Vol. 1 and then have to wait a few months for volume two.) I think you're right, though, that you should give it some time between stories, because half the fun of this series is trying to figure out what will happen next, just so Kirkman can totally surprise you when you find out what DOES happen next.
